Our Story: The Evolution of Hillcrest Health & Living

Hillcrest Health & Living began as a single skilled nursing facility originally called Hillcrest Care Center, which existed since 1967 serving aging adults in Bellevue, Nebraska. In 1989, visionary healthcare entrepreneur Jolene Roberts acquired the center, igniting a transformative journey toward creating one of Nebraska’s most comprehensive and progressive senior living organizations. That award-winning facility became Hillcrest Health & Rehab and today serves as the only licensed skilled nursing facility in Nebraska’s third-largest city.

Driven by a mission to go beyond traditional care, Jolene’s goal was to develop a full continuum of services that could support aging adults at every stage of life. Under her leadership, Hillcrest evolved into a network of integrated communities and services focused on personalized care, seamless transitions and exceptional quality of life. This innovation established Hillcrest Health & Living as a leader in the senior care space, known for setting the bar for excellence.

In 1997, Hillcrest Mable Rose opened as Sarpy County’s first assisted living community, setting a new standard for senior care in the region. With the addition of secure memory support neighborhoods and a licensed adult day center, Hillcrest Mable Rose continues to serve as a vibrant hub of connection and support for families navigating the aging journey.

In 2008, Hillcrest developed Hillcrest Country Estates in Papillion, a revolutionary 44-acre campus designed to provide every level of senior living in one place. The campus features the region’s only freestanding nursing households—The Cottages—recognized nationally for their homelike setting and culture change model of care. Over the years, the campus has grown to include independent villas, a resort-style Grand Lodge with apartments, assisted living, memory support and post-acute rehabilitation, creating a true continuum of care within a single neighborhood.

As Hillcrest expanded, it added key service lines across eastern Nebraska, including Hillcrest Millard, Hillcrest Silver Ridge, Hillcrest Shadow Lake, Hillcrest Highlands of Gretna and Hillcrest Firethorn, the system’s first care center in Lincoln. These communities offer a diverse range of options from independent living and assisted living to memory support, long-term care and post-acute rehab—all aligned under the Hillcrest philosophy of compassionate, person-centered care.

Hillcrest Home Care, Hospice and Caring Companions have continued to expand their reach to serve more aging adults in Eastern Nebraska and Western Iowa. Most recently, Hillcrest Hospice introduced its compassionate services to the Lincoln market.

In 2022, Jolene Roberts transitioned from daily operations to focus on Hillcrest Real Estate Development, the newly established branch for future growth and innovation in senior housing. Her enduring vision of building a continuum of care for aging adults continues to flourish today under the dedicated leadership of Hillcrest’s CEO Dr. Anthony Hatcher, a U.S. Air Force veteran and physician with more than 30 years’ experience in family practice and health system leadership.

Guided by the mission of “Inspiring people to live their best lives,” every day Hillcrest’s team members live the values of Integrity, Compassion, Respect, Teamwork and Service in everything we do. As we look to the future, we remain committed to being a beacon of excellence and innovation in senior living and healthcare in the communities we serve.
